Hi Maurice, From the look of my fellow writers you seem to have a mixed bag of views. On a personal view I write because I love to do it, I may not be any good. Yet. But I have always had a yearning to want to write a book. However at school I hated English and the teacher showed no interest in helping me at all. So my ability to write and understand grammar went downhill fast. I left school with barely the minimum level of English qualification. And have had to struggle to get to where I am today, since I have tried to improve myself. I have found a new urge to want to read and write. And this is what drives my energy and my love to write. I like to write poetry and short stories, I also have started my first proper novel. But It has been suggested to my that my early lack of writing skills could be down to a mild form of dyslexia. Which back in the 70's was unknown and unheard of.
I also understand if you become a good writer then money and fame should also follow.
Putting the same question back to you my friend, What drives you to want to write and what ticks your box when it comes down to why you do what you want to do.
Why would you write, if not for money? Why put yourself through all that grief for no reward?
Of course, you might love writing and simply have to do it. Or there's a story running through your head you must get down on paper. Maybe you've had an eventful life and want your descendants to know about it?
Nope - money it is. That's what goads me to suffer for my art.
Whether I'll ever earn any is a different story ;)
It certainly isn't for money, though it's always nice to earn things in competitions from something you love - and the time when I'll need to be earning an income is far enough in the future for me to 'assume' I'll be rich and renowned! But I think I write because I love the way you can create a little 'world' and people that you can control. I also love trying to describe things in words - I love the actual medium as much as anything else. Reading and writing are the things I principally spend my time doing!
I don't have a concrete reason, not like Victoria (I'm so sorry to hear you were bullied - I'm so glad that everything turned out well, and that writing was an integral part of why it did) and it's quite hard to say exactly why I love writing. Part of me thinks it might be showing off - I'm not really that good at anything else, and I like telling people my view of things - but I hope that's not the case!
