I had an idea for a novel but while trying to write it, I realised It wasnt really novel material so I've come across the idea that maybe it would be a better script than book. Ive never tried to write a script and would love some advice. How to start? Develope a character profile first or not?
I have written some drama and I always approach it the same way as any other piece.
Lay out your plotline, develop the characters and only then start to write.
Make sure though, to read it aloud. With a script you don't have the luxury of describing place or people or things. The dialogue has to do all the work. So make it work for you.
And don't forget that monologues are a good way to express the inner lives of a character or to push on a storyline.
Take a look at scripts up on the BBC writers room:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/writersroom/scripts/
Here you can see not only the various layouts required for different types of (Film, TV, Radio etc.) script, but also see that it is story, at the end of the day, that drives all narrative.
A script is just a format for a story.
So start with the story.
I'd actually like to know too. I have some good script/play ideas.
