This is the preface and Introduction of my memoir 'Whole in the Wound.'
It is a manuscript about my journey with cancer. It explores the space between conventional medicine and personal intuition. It draws on my background in naturopathic nutrition and psychology. I also provide information and reflect on dietary choices, therapeutic approaches and supportive practices that were part of this journey.
Please feel free to give me feedback on my preface and opening Introduction. I welcome your views. :-)
Preface
Beginning in the body - new understandings
The moment I heard the word, something inside me fell silent. Everything I thought would hold me — the doctors, the philosophies I trusted, even the unseen presence I leaned on — suddenly slipped away.
Cancer.
A single word, yet it rearranged my entire reality. I wasn’t brave. I wasn’t enlightened. I was frightened — altered — thrust into a world that no longer felt like my own.
I did not meet cancer as a battle to be fought or a lesson to be mastered. I met it in my body: in fear, in change, in disorientation. This book begins there — with staying, with listening, with learning how to remain when certainty dissolves.
This is not a story about fixing what is broken or returning to who I was before. It is about living inside physical, emotional, and spiritual upheaval without abandoning myself. Over time, I began to notice how intimately the body listens — how meaning and biology are not separate, and how small, steady acts of care can carry us through the most uncertain days.
What follows is part memoir, part companion: reflections from lived experience alongside the practices and perspectives that helped me stay present, resourced, and human in a reality I did not choose. The later chapters offer grounded approaches to self‑care — mind–body practices, thoughtfully considered supplementation, and supportive therapies — shared not as prescriptions, but as invitations.
Each is offered with discernment and humility, shaped by a deep respect for the body’s intelligence and its quiet capacity to respond and endure. May these reflections be a small light in the darker stretches, and a reminder that even in the most uncertain places, something steady within you remains.
Introduction – Navigating Breast Cancer Intuitively
Whispers from Inside
A single moment can redraw the map of a life — a word, a phone call, a doctor’s expression that shifts everything you thought you knew. Breast cancer did that to me in 2016, and for more than nine years thereafter it reshaped my body, my choices, and my understanding of what it means to heal.
My story is one among millions, yet it offers something I rarely found when I needed it most: a way of navigating breast cancer that honours both the body and the inner voice that rises when everything else falls away. As a naturopathic nutritionist and a woman determined to understand her own experience, I learned to blend evidence‑informed support with intuition, resilience, and the quiet wisdom that emerges in crisis.
This book is for anyone facing breast cancer — newly diagnosed, deep in treatment, or rebuilding afterwards, and for the people who love them. It speaks to the emotional, physical, and spiritual realities of this journey, offering grounded tools alongside lived experience. It does not promise control or certainty. It offers something more realistic and more sustaining: clarity, steadiness, and a way to stay connected to yourself when the world around you alters.
We live in a time saturated with information: medical guidance, nutritional strategies, memoirs, spiritual teachings, and endless opinions. Many are valuable. Few help you understand how to integrate them into your own life. What I offer here is a practical, compassionate companion — a way to sift through the noise, trust your instincts, and build a path that feels true to you.
Some days I felt strong. Some days I felt undone. And most days I felt both. But through every stage, a discrete inner knowing kept rising; while I couldn’t control the path, I could choose how I walked it. That choice became my anchor.
This same inner guidance lives in all of us. Once, intuition was our natural compass, and it can be again.
As you move through these pages, you’ll find parts of my story, the training that shaped me, and the tools that helped me stay centered. Think of them as lanterns along the path — lights you can carry, set down, or simply walk beside.
Take what resonates. Leave what doesn’t. And trust that your own insight will lead you forwards.
You do not have to walk this alone.
