Agree with the two above - it's a long haul process. It's also worth finding as many people as possible to read & constructively criticise your finished, polished work before attempting to go further. Often what you think you've written and what the reader actually perceives are two different things!

What Adrian said. Get the book written and the story as good as you want it to be, and then start thinking about agents and other options. Good luck!
