What conditions do you write best in?

Is there a particular place your write best in? When do you write?

By hand or typed or both? Music while writing or no music? Indoors outdoors etc..

I find it impossible to listen to music whilst writing. I also like a clean and uncluttered desk; even bits of paper and pens have to face a certain way. I usually write on the computer when I have amalgamated all scraps of paper that I have scrawled ideas and notes on that suit a particular story. I don't like writing when other people are around. I am an old man in an oak panelled study with a hearty fire and a comfy leather armchair. A break in writing means a toot on the old pipe and looking out through French windows on to the quintissential English countrside. One can dream...

I used to write on a lap-top in a small bedroom and liked it there, being in a kind of burrow. For various reasons of practicality, I now do writing on a PC in the study area of my kitchen diner. This sometimes feels like being in a traffic corridor, but I can still get in the zone, in shorter bursts. Now and then I play music to help myself get started, but not for the duration of writing.
