For me there is nothing scarier than demonology. Any with demons and the church is utlimate thrilling and cause sleepless nights but then you have to know how it all works, the workings of exorcism and the catholic church.
Drafting is the best way to start and you'll know where to begin, also depending on the type of horror, demons, ghosts etc.
I read the books of Beautiful Creatures and Clockwork Angel. It was very exciting page turner and not too much violence.
