Music and Writing

When writing do you listen to music to inspire your work? And if so what music do you choose to listen to and why? Or do you find that listening to music distracts you too much while your writing? I've always liked listening to music while I'm writing but what do other users think?

I find it easier to write with background noise, oddly enough, but I never listen to music while writing. I find my writing rythmn changes according to the tempo, which doesn't help my concentration or my story. But I am often inspired to write by listening to music (often in odd places, such as work... or the car).

Hi Lily

I can honestly say that I have a playlist on my laptop which is on as soon as my fingers are on the keyboard. It's more than 4 hours long and is made up of classical music from beethoven to themes from films and relaxation cds, which I find keeps away any other distractions and just allows me to do what I love the most.

Would highly recommend it!

Hi Lily,

I like to listen to anything. I create a playlist of many different genres and let it go. Sometimes when I write, I don't even hear the music, until a song starts playing to fill the mood of the situation the characters are experiencing, and that kind of inspires a better feel to the part. I think you should listen to whatever music you really like, but if it distracts you, stop. When I started driving years ago, I couldn't bear music in my ears, but now I can't drive without music...
