I had a publisher expressing interest in my work, asking me to submit whole manuscript then suddenly after five months, it was rejected. Is this common? I'm new to the game.

Thanks victoria. After reading synopsis publihser asked to see more - I sent six chapters then they requested whole manuscript; told me they were really enjoying reading it - all very encouraging. Two months later I asked had they made a decision as whether or not they would be publishing; they replied that yes, they were very interested in publishing my book; they then sent me a rejection letter three days later. I've read enough comments to know how hard it is to get published but with so much interest expressed in my book I did eventually believe in it. I have the problem now of not knowing whether or not it was actually read!
Sadly, a publisher asking to see your whole manuscript doesn't mean you're home and dry. Your proposal was obviously good for them to have requested it, but they don't take on every whole manuscript they read. Sometimes they reject it because of length or because they believe it would take too much work for them to fix to make it publishable, but other times it just doesn't fit their list quite as well as they'd hoped. Did they give you any indication?
Either way, you've got further than most. Suggesting to the next publisher in your cover letter that someone else did take the time to read it might go in your favour. Good luck.
