Thank you all for the feedback! :) I love reading all your answers, helpful and insightful.
I had always dismissed sci-fi as boring until I discovered George Orwell and HG Wells. Now I think that it's quite an interesting genre. If you look online there are stacks of short sci-fi story competitions that you might want to have a look at. I was struck by how many I found through searching for writing contests in general, and that sort of gave me the idea of having a go myself. I think that it's overlooked by a lot of people (I would say girls more than boys, but that's my opinion) when it's actually one of the most amazing genres - you can write about ANYTHING! If you've had an idea for a sci-fi story, I'd say go for it! I'm sure there are tips a-plenty online.
Good luck!
Science fiction is so broad a genre. I think it would be rather myopic of people to assume there's nothing in this genre for them. I personally think the work of Lem is far more human than a lot of contemporary fiction, he explores what it is to be human in a foreign setting that just happens to involve aliens or mysterious messages.
And with the continual advances in science and the sort of theories that are being thrown out nowadays (that obviously are in part conjecture) there's not much difference between what is viewed as atypical science fiction and science in some respects. Surely people would be excited to read about people's takes on what these seemingly approaching realities would be like? In short, I love science fiction and I hope there's a resurgence alongside this exciting age in which we live!
