A tense conundrum

by David Foster

This might entertain those that love grammar.

In part of my work I am now writing I am dealing with the 3rd person (limited) perspective from the far future of events taking place (that by then have taken place) in the next few years from now.

Need a diagram? (I do).

So I am writing in 2013 for people looking back from (say) 3030 at events that take place in 2020.

Therefore the question is: what tense would I be writing in?

Okay :-) :-) Thankyou everyone :-) :-)

This has been a way of playing with an idea for me. (Playing seriously I should add). All your comments have been very useful.

Victoria... I am still banging my head about the "That"/"Who" issue... Joking in later posts aside - what did I do wrong (technically) please? Have I just used an alternative wording, dropped out of the "correct" into the vernacular - or what? HELP!

(I would bet that the grammar in this/that/the above question is awful as well... :-( )

Thanks :-)

You could invent it. Didn't George Orwell invent his own language in his book '1984'? Esperanto is an invented language that one of my daughters has learned and she tells me that it isn't difficult to learn.

I should know better! Now my brain is boiling... I went for an ether walk-round of tenses - and nearly got lost. (It's fortunate that we can just keep hitting the "back" arrow...)

So... Perhaps one of you (or more) would explain to me what I am doing with something like...

"Joel knew that the time would come when Elice would look back on the events that would certainly happen in Arran's near future".

What I'm doing apart from being completely confusing that is :-)

(I think I will just go and put my head in some ice for a while). :-)

Thanks

David
