Who to believe?

I'm very new to this, so please be gentle! I have written/edited/redrafted what I hope to be my first published work. I am now at the point of approaching agents and publishers.

However, the more I read into publishing houses and agents, I stagger across a wealth of reviews telling me how awful they are...and Google just loves Austin MacAuley!

How do you go about finding the right representation? I understand that this is a huge question but any tips or advice will be gratefully received.

May I pick up on the point made by Elsie Byron? She wrote, ‘… Writers & Artist book, most libraries have them.’ It seems to me every budding writer should surround themselves with good reference books on the subject of writing, and the current W&A Year Book is the vital source of reference.

You need all your reference books to hand – not in the local library.

Hi Neil. Several weeks ago I asked about Austin MacAuley and was told to steer clear. They are vanity publishers and will ask for money. The best place to find out about agents and publishers is in the Writers and Artists book, most library's have them. Hope this helps.
