Who to believe?

I'm very new to this, so please be gentle! I have written/edited/redrafted what I hope to be my first published work. I am now at the point of approaching agents and publishers.

However, the more I read into publishing houses and agents, I stagger across a wealth of reviews telling me how awful they are...and Google just loves Austin MacAuley!

How do you go about finding the right representation? I understand that this is a huge question but any tips or advice will be gratefully received.

Hi Neil,

Have you checked the advice section on this website? Red 'Advice' tab at top of page. Lots of info there about finding/ choosing agents and publishers.

The two Golden Rules are:

1) Read all the terms & conditions very carefully before signing anything.

2) Be wary of anyone asking for money!

Number 2 doesn't apply if you decide to self-publish and need to buy professional services such as editing or cover design, but it still makes sense to get everything in writing so you know exactly what you're paying for.

Good luck!
