Writers block.

Hi!

I am writing a child-adult fiction. I started in June and until now I have only written 3 pages. I am only 13 and I think at this age I don't have enough knowledge to write a book but I am trying my best for writing a book. I just wanted some advice from you all to guide me about writing book.

Hi Kashaf,

I encourage you to keep writing! No matter what else you do or don't do, keep showing up. I'm a creativity coach and teaching artists and I tell all my students and clients to keep their commitments small -- no more 15 minutes a day (I do this too). You don't have to stop after 15 minutes, you can keep going if you want, but the only thing you have to do honor your commitment is show up for 15 minutes. Some days you'll draft new stuff, some days you might sit and stare out the window and think about your story, some days you might do research (to find out more about your character: where s/he lives, what her/his hobbies are, what s/he does). Some days you might read books about writing, some days you might read good books. We writers learn an awful lot by reading.

Don't worry about not knowing how to write a book; part of writing a book is figuring out how to write the book and every book is a little different.

I also encourage to check out online writing classes -- the Loft Literary Center (where I teach adults) has a fabulous youth writing program with both in-person and online classes. You'll find them at https://www.loft.org/classes/ Select Youth as the Class Category and hit Search.

Best of luck to you!

Hi, Kashaf!

I've now installed an on-screen keyboard, which means that I won't have to copy and paste other people's sentences (or use numbers instead of their look-alike letters) in order to compose a comment of my own.

I didn't read all of your shared work because I was in the middle of a rush to get another book to the printers. But what I did read looked good and - as I wrote below - I had no idea that you were so young.

I'm very aware that some writers were born to be novelists while others - like me - seem more suited to the short story. Perhaps you were born to be a novelist. However, I write the following in case you haven't even considered this option:

Have you ever thought about writing short stories? Perhaps your "writers' block" is just your Muse trying to tell you that - in this case - you shouldn't be trying to turn a short story into a novel... at least not YET.

I'm NOT attempting to turn you off your true path, just give you something to think about.

All the best!

Jimmy

p.s. SOME of my regular keys do work, but to sign my own name I need to use the on-screen keyboard for all but the y!
