Writer's Block

Hello fellow aspiring writers,

Does any of you also suffer from Writer's Block? It seems as though I am under that category of 'illness' at present as I seemed to have lost interest in finishing my manuscript. I tend to open it but my brain is just finding it 'hard and uncommitted' to engage.

Any advice or tips on how to overcome this? Thanks in advance for your input.

Hi Susan, Thanks for your input. No, there is no pressure whatsoever to finish it in a certain time. It's more or less a hobby of mine to write. It is something I enjoy doing to occupy my free time rather than trying to make a living out of it. it just seems to irritate me lately as each time I tried to continue writing, I got a blank head, there seemed no enthusiasm to engage my brain. And I thought this must be what the writing world calls Writer's Block.

Unless you're under some sort of deadline pressure, why worry? As already suggested, putting it away for a while is good advice. Or you could do something worse, like try to write the synopsis! Seriously though, after a break, ask yourself why you're having problems - has the story become boring to you, have you simply got no idea where it's going, or conversely, have you over-plotted and curbed the free flight of your imagination? Try doing a chapter by chapter summary if you've lost direction, because that will help you to spot gaps in the story-line, stagnant stretches etc. Or you could pick a character you especially care about and write freely about them (not as part of your MS) to bring them alive & remind you why you want to tell their story. Do other creative activities, take country walks where your mind can relax and be free. The main thing is not to worry about it!

Thank you Miriam and Elsie, I will take your advice and try not to open it for a week, at least.
