Creative non-fiction blends the art of storytelling with facts, allowing you to shape narratives that are engaging and authentic to others. It enables you to explore personal experiences, societal issues, and historical events through a vivid, compelling lens — transforming ordinary moments into extraordinary narratives.

In this 12-week online course, you’ll explore a variety of forms within the creative non-fiction genre, including biography, reportage, nature writing, and more. Whether you’ve already started writing and need guidance to move forward, or simply have an idea you’d like to develop, this course will provide you with the essential tools to progress confidently.

Through a combination of insightful lessons, interactive exercises, and practical assignments, you’ll learn how to convey information effectively, structure compelling narratives, and articulate your unique perspective. Experience meaningful progress with personalised one-to-one feedback from your tutor, tailored specifically to your work.

  • Settings and their influence on your narrative
  • Writing in-depth about people and nature
  • Finding your voice and telling your story

 

Designed for writers with no prior formal training, the course focuses on the foundational skills needed to structure and write compelling creative non-fiction. Under the expert guidance of your, you’ll receive personalised feedback on up to 3,000 words of your writing. Additionally, you’ll have a one-to-one tutorial to discuss your work in depth and explore your next steps as a writer.

Dan Richards

Dan Richards is a writer and journalist who specialises in travel, memoir, and culture. His first book, Holloway, co-authored with Robert Macfarlane & Stanley Donwood, was a Sunday Times Bestseller. Overnight – an exploration of nocturnal operations which replenish, repair and protect the world whilst most of us are asleep – was published in 2024. He has written for newspapers and magazines including the GuardianEconomistMonocle, and Telegraph.

Dan has taught at Bristol University, and currently tutors at NCW Academy, Moniack Mhor, and Arvon Foundation. He is an established chair and speaker at Edinburgh International Book Festival, Hay-on-Wye, and many others around the UK. Image © Owen Richards
