Dare to be Funny: Writing Social and Political Satire

8th October 2025 7:00pm to 8:30pm, Online

Humour can do more than just make your reader laugh. In the form of satire, it can also challenge power structures and reveal truths.

Author of Fundamentally (Shortlisted for the Women's Prize 2025) Nussaibah Younis is going to be delving into writing social and political satire in this online masterclass.

She'll cover everything from tone to technique (irony, hyperbole, parody and more) to the importance of clarity of purpose. Plus, Nussaibah will help you navigate finding the right target for your satire, and using satire to distil uncomfortable truths.

Through exercises and examples, Nussaibah will teach you how to write satire with empathy and impact.

The session will end with a brief Q&A, so come ready with your questions.

The masterclass will take place online via Teams. It will also be recorded so if you are unable to attend live, you'll be able to catch-up and access the recording for up to two weeks after the event has taken place.

This event is being run in collaboration with Book Aid International, with proceeds from ticket sales going towards the brilliant work they do!

Speaker profiles
Nussaibah Younis

After a ten-year career in academia, think-tanks and peacebuilding in the Middle East, I jacked it all in and wrote a novel. Fundamentally was released in the US and the UK on 25th February 2025. I write biting satire covering everything from global politics to faith, queer identity and relationships. Probably not for the easily offended. I live in North London with my gorgeous labradoodle Mish Mish, and am writing my second novel.

About Fundamentally:

When academic Nadia is disowned by her puritanical mother and dumped by her lover, she decides to make a getaway - accepting a UN job in Iraq. Tasked with rehabilitating ISIS women, Nadia becomes mired in the opaque world of international aid, surrounded by bumbling colleagues.

But then Nadia meets Sara, a precocious and sweary East Londoner who joined ISIS at just fifteen, and she is struck by how similar their stories are. Both from a Muslim background, both feisty and opinionated, with a shared love of Dairy Milk and rude pick-up lines, Sara and Nadia immediately connect and a powerful friendship forms. When Sara confesses a secret, Nadia is forced to make a difficult choice.

A bitingly original, wildly funny and razor-sharp exploration of love, family, religion, radicalism, and the decisions we make in pursuit of connection and belonging, Fundamentally upends and explores a defining controversy of our age with heart, complexity and humour - delivered by one of the most fearless and talented new voices in contemporary fiction.

About Book Aid International

Book Aid International logoBy 2030, over a third of the world’s young people will be in Africa. Millions of them will have no books at all. That’s an estimated 733 million children and young people who could become future doctors, teachers, business leaders, writers and more.

But, for millions of children and young people in Africa there is a real risk they will not realise their potential and be able to lift themselves out of the cycle of poverty, because they lack access to books and quality education. Together, we can get them the books they need.

Through Generation Reader we will work with our partners to scale up our vital work, creating access to books in even more schools, more public and community libraries and more universities across sub-Saharan Africa. We must act now to have an impact on the next generation of young people in Africa.

Proceeds from your tickets sales will go towards Book Aid International’s Generation Reader campaign. You can find out more, and donate further, here.
