How to Write a Chilling Ghost Story

31st October 2025 1:00pm to 6:00pm, The Mermaid Inn

Join experienced book editor and author, Sara Starbuck, and award winning poet, playwright and ghostwriter, Ted Gooda, at the Mermaid Inn in Rye for a thrilling Ghost Story Writing Workshop this Halloween… when the veil is at its thinnest. Spend the day – and maybe the night –  at one of Britain’s most haunted inns to learn the elusive art of raising goosebumps and inspiring nightmares.

This workshop will explore where terror truly lies in a narrative and how to evoke an emotional response that lingers with readers long after they have turned the final page. We will show you how to find inspiration for stories, then take your audience on a harrowing journey which chills them to the core. You’ll learn about building tension and atmosphere, as well as ways to make a ghost story credible and compelling in a contemporary context while creating fascinating back stories and memorable characters.

Tea, coffee and refreshments will be served during the workshop.
