Are you working on a non-fiction book?
Dr Shahed Yousaf, author of Stitched Up: Stories of Life and Death from a Prison Doctor, joins us this October to share his insights into putting truth onto the page, from how to develop an idea and shape it into a book through to navigating the research process and exploring ways to find your voice as a writer.
Shahed will also help you consider the ethics of representing real lives, how to safeguard the people you are writing about, and how to understand what to keep off the page. Plus, he’ll talk about how to bring humour into the hard-hitting, and how to tell difficult stories with sensitivity.
Finally, Shahed will share his journey to publication, and any advice he has for writers looking to take a step in that direction, as well as the impact mentorship programmes can have on a writer’s journey.
The session will end with a brief Q&A, so come ready with your questions.
The masterclass will take place online via Teams. It will also be recorded so if you are unable to attend live, you'll be able to catch-up and access the recording for up to two weeks after the event has taken place.
Please note, all proceeds from this £1 masterclass will be donated to charity.
Dr Shahed Yousaf is a GP who works in prisons, substance misuse and with the homeless community. He was shortlisted for the Bath Flash Fiction Prize 2016 and commended for the Faber & Faber FAB Prize 2017. Shahed won a place on to the Writing West Midlands Room 204 Mentoring scheme and the Middle Way Mentoring Project in 2019.
The workshop fee of £1 (incl. VAT) is payable in full online.
This is a live online event which will be presented using video conferencing software. Joining instructions and full guidance will be provided by the W&A Team a week before the event start-date. Please note, all event timings are in UK time.
