The Science of Writing Characters

24th February 2021 6:00pm to 7:30pm, Online

'Good writing, as Kira-Anne Pelican notes, is the result of imagination, observation and instinct, an understanding of human behavior. Yet most writers fail. Early drafts are too often underdeveloped, as writing fast trumps writing deep. Pelican's book is a salutary reminder to those for whom it does not come naturally: that complex characters are more engaging, that if successfully drawn they take the reader or viewer on a compelling and emotional journey. The Science of Writing Characters is not prescriptive but is an excellent guide to what you can do to help your imagination create powerful, memorable and emotionally engaging characters.' – Julian Friedmann

In this very special Bloomsbury Institute event, we're delighted to present an interview with PhD, writer and script consultant Kira-Anne Pelican and a short writing workshop to bring to life the power of Kira-Anne's approach to writing complex characters that take readers and viewers on a satisfying emotional, as well as entertaining, journey.

In the first part of this event, we'll present a short interview Q&A with Kira-Anne from 6pm - 6:30pm, followed by a 1-hour writing workshop from 6:30pm where you'll learn from Kira-Anne how to create rounded characters using the 'Big Five' dimensions of personality and illustrate how these personality traits shape action, relationships and dialogue.

We hope you are free to join us. Help us spread the world and share this event with the writers you know who may find it useful.
