Wild Writing

9th September 2026 12:30pm to 1:30pm, Online

Do you want to write water onto a page, turn fields into syntax, weave words like webs? Then join author Natasha Carthew (Undercurrent, Rough Edges) for this masterclass on nature writing.

Historically nature writing has been dominated by particular voices and Natasha will challenge who is allowed to write nature, and how nature writing can be defined. She’ll share her advice on how to dig for your own authentic story, especially when coming from a low socioeconomic background. And she’ll offer tips on bringing memoir and nature writing together, and finding your voice on the page.

The session will end with a brief Q&A, so come ready with your questions.

All profits from this £5 masterclass will go towards offering bursary places and opportunities across our events and editorial services.

The masterclass will take place online via Teams. It will also be recorded so if you are unable to attend live, you'll be able to catch-up and access the recording for up to two weeks after the event has taken place.

About Rough Edges

Beyond the picture postcards, Britain's coastal communities are suffering. Crowds flood the beaches during summer heat waves but they quickly vanish again, leaving behind drifts of rubbish and unstable seasonal jobs. Seaside property is in high demand but affordable only for landlords and gentrifiers. The cost-of-living crisis and the ongoing pains of austerity trap those at the vulnerable edges of our nation in poverty. Having grown up in rural Cornwall, Natasha Carthew leaves the county in search of a new home. Travelling the country and exploring the towns and cities of our coast, she meets the people fighting to keep these places alive. With fierce compassion, she shares their voices and their stories. Rough Edges is a rallying cry for the beauty and importance of our coast and its people.
