From literary and genre fiction to poetry, film and TV, magic realism expresses a deeper truth to the everyday. It lets our themes and emotions take physical form, and allows the worlds we live in within our own minds to become real places in the worlds we create.
No experience necessary: explore and enjoy strange new worlds with fiction and non-fiction author, lecturer, writing coach and founder of the Writers’ Gym membership and podcast, Dr Rachel Knightley.
Week 1: Making Rules, Breaking Rules
How do we establish our realm of magic in a naturalistic world? And what is ‘realism’, really?! This first week explores the confines of the terminology and the opportunities to break into new imaginative worlds.
Week 2: Magic Realism in Fiction
Tour through magic realist texts, and enjoy creative confidence building exercises to master these techniques and concepts, and make them your own.
Week 3: Visualising Magic Realism
Scripts for film, TV and theatre are the focus this week, how they have made use of magic realism and what the opportunities are that create emotional impact and food for thought through visual and other sensory imagery.
Week 4: Poetry, Magic and Reality
When narrative and non-narrative poetry mixes realism with magic, we have clear windows to mental and physical places and states. Develop crystal clarity in your writing and imagery through poetry exercises and examples.
Week 5: Politics, Morals and Magic
Some of the most famous magic realist texts have caused some of the greatest political reactions. What does that tell us about how we dare tell our own stories? And what is the power magic realism holds over literal reality?
Week 6: Bringing the Magic to Life
Celebrate the progress you’ve made in your own magic realism, and begin creating the opportunities that will keep you writing with confidence and — whenever you’re ready — bringing your stories to their future readers.
