I am writing a fantasy book, not one for children. however, at times I find myself lost as what to write next. what are peoples general feeling on these kinds of books? here is a snippet of text, comments please.
“You may now dine with your ancestors” the man continued to laugh in Lord Kishar’s face which was ended with the loud snap of the man’s neck.
John Wilson, thankyou, I have added your redefined version of that line of text, I was having trouble with it anyway so thanks a bunch
Thankyou to all the posts, every little helps as Tesco say.
To answer the first question though...
Fantasy as a genre?
I think that all fiction writing could be described as fantasy.
If we were to pick crime writing out of the air isn't that a fantasy? A relatively few people, few if any distractions, no or only styalised excessive work loads, convenient clues (half of which might only be known to the hero until a denouement) and it all gets sorted out in a few weeks with everybody living happily ever after.
An historical novel? How can anyone know what King John or Lord Mountbatten said?
The need is for the fantasy to hold together. To a large degree it doesn't matter how weird the concept is so long as it has internal integrity.
When we go to the theatre we ask ourselves to suspend disbelief. Isn't this the same when we read a story? This would mean that the writer's task is to keep us convinced by the scene, plot, dialogue and action.
Hope this helps.
