Are there any other children's writers here?

Hello,

I'm new to W&A - just joined today. I'd really like to get some feedback on some of my work, but I don't think I fit with everyone else's genres. I've been writing children's picture book stories in rhyme. Can anyone suggest where I can find some like-minded writers? Also, I feel a bit apprehensive about sharing my work here - if it is in a public forum like this, does that affect the chances of it being published in any way?

Thanks,

Rachael

Hi Rachael,

I have just joined today, and came across your question whilst scanning for authors similar to me . . . Like you, I also write (mostly) rhyming picture book stories (texts only - can't draw for toffee!)

I don't have an answer to your question I'm afraid - personally I would be reluctant to post any of my texts that I might hope to eventually place on here, 'just in case' it caused any problems further down the line. If, on the other hand, I was trying my hand at something completely different then I would be glad of any developmental feedback I might receive - as I would consider myself highly unlikely to place anything so embryonic anyway.

Good luck with your picture books!

Hi, Rachael, and welcome! Add me to your [growing, it seems] list of writers for children. Like

I write children's books. I read them too."

I read children's books for pleasure (in fact, my top 3 books of all time are one 20th C novel for adults and the 2 Alice books by Lewis Carroll)... and sometimes get disgusted. Why do some writers treat children like tasteless idiots? Why do so many publishers stick to clichés instead of exciting new ideas that encourage children to THINK?

This is great - there are plenty of us! Elisabeth, well done! That's pretty impressive, writing from scratch so quickly. I'm no expert, but my understanding is that you own the copyright of anything you have written already. I don't think there is any need to register anything. I always email finished work to myself, so that I have a clearly dated copy that can't be tampered with!

I only started writing last summer, and also have to fit it in around work and children, so I'm not as productive as I'd like to be, but I have written & finished 4 short rhyming stories, almost completed a 5th and have two more on the go. I took an online course last year, which I bought through Groupon for £14! My day job is running professional development courses, including designing online courses, and I have to say, the writing course I took didn't seem particularly professional, but I still learned a lot for not much money! It covered things like character and plot development, as well as how to approach publishers and agents.
